We mostly use reclaimed materials obtained from New Orleans houses undergoing remodeling--19th century heart pine and long-leaf pine studs milled down to expose a grain and color that can't be found anywhere else. We use *barge board when we can get it, and we also incorporate trim and casings and a myriad of architectural elements and repurpose them in surprising ways. Folks in New Orleans have a reverence for the hard-earned patina and character developed through time and life. We carefully choose and showcase some of the saw chatter marks and notches and mortise holes that tell stories. And this wood is full of stories. The art of this furniture lies in seeing the story and choosing the elements of character that best tells it. The Japanese have a phrase--Wabi Sabi-- that translates to something like "The beauty of imperfection." It takes skill and artistry to work with these unconventional and imperfect materials which are better described as more historic than rustic. This is not backwoods axe-hewn furniture--so the beautiful imperfections are the character of the wood, not sloppy joinery. It's not an excuse for bad craft--just the opposite. We don't "distress" anything and we try to make the workmanship as perfect as possible in order to make the art the star and let the workmanship simply serve. This wood has had a long life of service and we treat it with reverence. There is no Faux anything. We love a challenge and enjoy creating unique and innovative designs. Whether you want a one-of-a-kind piece of furniture or a custom-built-in, we can deliver something that will bring a certain presence, perhaps an aura or energy, but without a doubt, something with Character.

You can't get this at a lumber yard. You have to know a guy. And now you can say: I've gotta guy...Look at that wood! sure it is old, 170 years in a house. But the grain grew in an old growth forest. An American pristine forest unaccustomed to the sound of an axe or English belching and cursing. Some pines are estimated to be a thousand years old. I mean that is way before Columbus didn't discover America. A thousand years ago, at the Council of Orleans, Robert II of France burned thirteen heretics at Orleans. These were just the first to burn. Think of all that wood....How would you like a piece of furniture built with wood NOT GUILTY of burning our beloved saint Joan? A piece of wood that retired from the 100 years war and now convalesces in the peaceful, non-heretic burning home of yours. What an honor.
Because I am always in the field working with power tools, I can't always answer phones. But I check emails and texts regularly, when I'm not up on a ladder or inches away from spinning saw blades.
